About Governors Club

Governors Club is a gated community located just south of Chapel Hill. It is one of the highest points in North Carolina east of the mountains, spanning across 2,200 acres of Edwards Mountain and its foothills. There are spectacular views, particularly to the east and south. Governors Club is owned and managed by its property owners association, its original developer having sold its interest.

Governors Club is fairly well built out, with approximately 800 homes completed or under construction from the 1200 lots available. Many of the remaining lots will never be built upon due to geographic constraints or because they have been purchased by adjacent homeowners. The lots are divided into several groups. The largest group is labeled “Estate Lots”. Homes are fully customized on lots ranging from 2/3 of an acre to several acres. Home prices range from $600,000 to several million dollars. There are five other concentrated neighborhoods consisting of smaller lots, generally with a consistent architectural theme and size. Lot sizes generally range from .25 to .5 acres and home prices from $600,000 to over $1 million.

The central amenities of this private country club are a 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, a 40,000 square foot full service clubhouse and a separate sports center comprising tennis, fitness and swimming, including an indoor pool. The Club recently renovated its club house to add more dining options, expanded the fitness center, added two tennis courts and revamped the pool area to add a splash pad for small children, a new playground and improved sun shade.

Governors Club has been member-owned for ten years and is managed by its Board of Directors. A Property owner is not required to be a member, nor is property ownership a requirement for membership. Slightly more than half of current property owners are members. Most members are property owners.

Demographically, 60% of residents work full time with the remainder retired or semi-retired. Governors Club is located in Chatham County so children attending public school go to North Chatham Elementary and Middle School and Northwood High School. Numerous families also choose independent schools in Durham, Chapel Hill or Cary, especially for high school.
